ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is asymmetric digital subscriber’s line. This service is based on constant and fast Internet access through existent telephone line, but without occupying it or change of a telephone number.

Traditional Internet access by classic dial-up modem (28.8, 33.6 or 56 K) occupies your telephone line, so when you’re on the Internet you’re not able to receive or make calls.

With ADSL your computer is constantly connected on the Internet and your telephone line is free for receiving or making calls or sending and receiving faxes. Internet access through ADSL doesn’t affect your phone bill and they’re charged separately. Both services function completely independent from each other although they’re realized through same pair of wires.

In relation with classical HDSL where download and upload are symmetrical with maximum speed of 2.3 Mbps, ADSL downstream and upstream are asymmetrical and bandwidth of downstream is much bigger than upstream.

Bandwidth of ADSL depends of quality of pair itself and of distance between user and his parent telephone central. Maximum distance on which is possible to realize this service is from 5.5 to 6 km (similar distance like for ISDN).
